How a Dangerous Movie Stunt Left a Disney Channel Alum Injured

By  |

We can’t believe it’s been 10 whole years since High School Musical first came into our lives and we fell in love with Troy Bolton, Gabriella Montez and the rest of the East High crew. And although we’ll always think of Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens as innocent little music lovers, the gang has definitely made steps to move away from The Mouse.

Since HSM came to an end, Ash has been on multiple TV shows like Sons of Anarchy and Clipped, and now even has her own cosmetics line. Not only is the 31-year-old a leading lady in the TV and business world, but she is also making her highly anticipated return to film alongside Orange Is the New Black‘s Jason Biggs in the new movie, Amateur Night.

This role is definitely anything Ash has done before, as she plays Fallon, a confident prostitute that Jason’s character is hired to drive around in order to make money to support his growing.

“It was definitely nerve-wracking and out of my comfort zone,” she told us when we recently sat down to chat about the film. “Obviously the directors didn’t think of me first for this character and I had to go in and fight for it and prove that I could do it.”

Taking on such a different role than what she is most known for was a risk, but Ashley explained that her “whole goal over the past three years” was “just to do things that are out of [her] comfort zone.” But while this is def a risqué gig, perhaps the television queen didn’t know just how uncomfortable she’d actually be.

“One of the craziest things was… we had to do this getaway scene where we have to be thrown around in this car. This is an indie movie, small budget movie, so they threw us into this car and I was wondering, ‘How are we going to shoot this? Are we going to be on a rig, or just fake it later?’ Nope — the streets weren’t blocked off, we were in normal traffic in this car and the driver decided to literally throw us around in the car. We were thrashing against the window and the DP was losing the camera and it was so crazy. We were legit getting hurt in that scene! We obviously didn’t actually hit into another car in the scene, but yeah… a lot of it wasn’t acting; we were actually getting hurt. It was very dangerous.”

Thankfully, Ash and the rest of the cast walked away from the scene just fine and can now look back and laugh.

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do! Ashley’s new movie Amateur Night will hit limited theaters tomorrow and VOD & Digital On Demand on August 12!
