Editor Showdown: Is Ariana Grande Better Than Mariah Carey? Weigh In!
Ever since Ariana Grande hit the music scene, she's been compared to the legendary Mariah Carey. (It's probably all those vocal runs.) When the 20-year-old singer first heard the comparisons, she said, "[Mariah's] an inspiration — she's the greatest female vocalist, so it was definitely a compliment."
Since then, Ariana's established herself a bit more in the industry, so we're here to determine which of the singers is ultimately better. I, Kaitlin, am on Team Ariana, while Amanda is on Team Mariah. Read both sides of the debate, then take your pick in our latest Editor Showdown…
Kaitlin, Associate Editor: Let me preface my argument by saying that Mariah Carey is an AH-mazing performer. I grew up listening to her, so I'll always have respect for her as a singer. And those high notes of hers? Killer. With that being said, I believe that Ariana Grande is still better for the following reasons:
As far as actual singing goes, Mariah's not as good as she used to be. (Yes, I said it.) Have you heard her updated rendition of "All I Want for Christmas Is You?" Girl should've left it alone. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande's live version is spectacular. And that was just last year! Plus, Ariana started out on Broadway. BROADWAY, PEOPLE!
On another note, Ariana's got more chops in the acting department. Her sidekick stint on Victorious even snagged her a spin-off. (Sam & Cat, hello!) As opposed to Mariah, whose starring role in Glitter probably got her banned from all future lead roles.
When it comes to star power, Ariana just has it. Mariah has, what, American Idol and Nick Cannon? Honestly, does the public care enough about 'em? Ariana's got the whole package, down to her budding relationship with The Wanted's Nathan Sykes. Mariah, I think your throne's been taken.
Amanda, Editor: OK, so obviously these two singers are from completely different generations, so it's a little hard to compare them since music has changed so much over the years, but if we're really getting down to the numbers: Mariah is the QUEEN! First of all, since her debut in the early '90s, MC has sold over 200 MILLION records. I hate to say it, but I don't think that's a threshold Ariana (or many other modern artists these days, TBH) will be able to cross. Heck, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry both had dismal record sales for their latest albums, and they're HUGE.
Also, her videos are '90s perfection… while Ariana just tries to imitate. (Have you seen the "Baby I" video? It's cute, but Mariah actually LIVED in the '90s.) "Fantasy?" "Always Be My Baby?" "Honey?" "Heartbreaker?" People STILL love those videos (and many more) to this day. Are we COMPLETELY sure Ariana has that kind of staying power where people will be talking about her videos 20 years from now?
And, yes, maybe Mariah isn't as vocally good as she was back in the day, but let's be real — her OG version of "All I Want For Christmas" SLAYS any other version that's ever been attempted. Also, Mariah originated that tune, so imitate all you want, but Mariah did it first.
And I'm sorry, but I think Mariah and Nick Cannon are an adorable couple. He's really come along way since his All That days! And who would have thought they'd actually last after their whirlwind courtship back in 2008? OK, and that whole American Idol judging thing may have blown up in her face, but she's laughing all the way to the bank. Go, girl!
So, which one's ultimately better — Ariana Grande or Mariah Carey? Shout out your picks in the comments below, and make sure to tell us what we should debate about next!
