Aretha Franklin, one of the most iconic singers of all time, is dead. The Queen of Soul passed away on August 16 after a long battle with cancer, her family confirms. She was 76 years old.

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart,” the Franklin family’s statement reads. “We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family.”

The soulful crooner gave us classics like “Respect,” “Chain of Fools” and “Natural Woman” and is credited as one of the people who inspired many of today’s most popular musicians to start singing.
