Car accidents happen all the time. That’s how we lost Paul Walker in 2014, and Tiffany Thornton‘s husband, Chris Carney, in 2015. Usually, though, the person is one of the people in the vehicle or, equally sad, a pedestrian hit by a vehicle with a driver in it. This weekend, though, Hollywood came together to mourn the loss of an actor who, in a very freak accident, was fatally struck by his own car… without anyone driving it.

According to reports, 27-year-old Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed early Sunday morning after getting pinned between his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a brick mailbox pillar. TMZ says, “the engine was running when his body was discovered, and the car was in neutral.”

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office “concluded that Yelchin’s death was an accident” was caused by “blunt traumatic asphyxia,” also known as suffocation.

The young star was discovered by friends after he didn’t show up to meet them. The reason for his leaving the vehicle was not confirmed.

Upon learning of Anton’s passing, many stars tweeted their grievances:

Anton had many upcoming projects, including Star Trek Beyond. If you want to see him on the big screen again, the third film in the Star Trek franchise hits theaters on July 22.
You can now add Anton Yelchin to the list of celebrities who were gone too soon:
