One of The Hunger Games‘ Most Beloved Stars is Coming Out — Again!
Stars like Miley Cyrus and Rowan Blanchard have always been outspoken about their views on gender issues, and they’re not the only ones. The Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg has also been quite vocal about her viewpoints, proving that she really doesn’t care about the criticism that comes her way.
Earlier this year, the now-17-year-old came out as bisexual. She revealed this via her social media accounts, making sure that everyone knew how she identified. Fast forward a few months later, and Amandla has now changed the way she identifies. Rather than considering herself bisexual, the THG actress is more comfortable with identifying as gender fluid. Taking to Tumblr, the young star responded to fan who asked about which gender pronouns she prefers to use.
Amandla’s initial response to the question was, “I honestly don’t know… I mean they/them makes me feel comfortable, but I know that the media and the general populace that follows me will critique it/not understand which makes me feel sad and almost more uncomfortable. So I guess she/her for now.”
However, said fan replied, encouraging Amandla to stand by her beliefs and continue to push the boundaries of what society views as acceptable. Adding to her original response, Amandla said, “Damn, you right. They/them it is.”
Even though Amandla stated that she feels more comfortable with gender pronouns like “they” and “them,” the actress would still prefer online pages — like her Wikipedia — to maintain “she” and “her” pronouns.
“I was kind of hoping it would stay within the Tumblr realm for now as it will probably throw off potential employers and producers who want to hire me for movies — they often look at Wiki pages. Please keep it she/her up there for now. Thanks,” the actress wrote.
And for people who criticize the actress for her changing gender views, Amandla has something to say. “I’m allowed to explore myself and how I see myself in the world however the f*** I want.”
Kudos to Amandla for always staying true to her beliefs and speaking out about gender norms!
Amandla isn’t the only person who is wise beyond her years. These beautiful celebrities also act mature for their age:
While she's known as relatable, clumsy and an all-around jokester — things normal 25-year-olds are — the Oscar-winner takes time to put all of that aside to shed light on the mental health stigma and also speak out for women. Like that time she penned that forthright essay on sexism in Hollywood.
