All the Actresses Who Auditioned for Brie Larson’s Oscar-Winning Role in Room
Brie Larson recently completed her award-show sweep when she took home the Oscar for best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2016 Academy Awards. And she so deserved it — the 26-year-old star was heartbreakingly perfect as Joy “Ma” Newsome in the movie version of Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel. But while Brie’s slow climb to Hollywood success was entirely well deserved and long awaited, she wasn’t the only young actress who tried out for the Oscar-winning role.
As we mentioned, Room was a best-selling book long before it was ever picked up for an on-screen adaptation. When word got out that A24 bought the rights to the story, many female stars who were fans of Emma’s work reached out for a chance to get on board the project. Of course there could only be one who would eventually become an Academy-Award-winning actress, but that’s not to say there was a lack of trying on others’ end.
1. Shailene Woodley — Shai and Brie have been best friends since they starred together in The Spectacular Now, and while they always support each other’s projects, having the same career pits them against one another every so often. In fact, after seeing a bunch of actresses audition for the lead role of Ma in Room, film executives narrowed their selection down to two — these BFFs. Ultimately, the 26-year-old actress ended up getting the part, but the 24 year old had no hard feelings. “I just wanted the movie to be made,” she told Vulture. “It will be a masterpiece.” And boy was she ever right…
2. Emma Watson — Although Emma Watson will always be known as Hermione Granger, she’s definitely made moves to move away from the Harry Potter world by taking on more mature roles. Emma Donoghue, the book’s author, said that when it was first announced that her novel was going to be turned into a film, tons of young actresses called and expressed interest in the role; the 25-year-old star was one of them.
3. Rooney Mara — The 30 year old nabbed a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars for her role in Carol, but she very well could’ve gotten a nom for a different part. Room’s author Emma Donoghue also revealed that the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo actress was one of the female celebrities who came in to audition for Ma.
4. Mia Wasikowska — Lastly, the novelist spilled that the Alice in Wonderland actress was the final young Hollywood star to make it quite far in the Room audition process. Although Mia wasn’t successful in landing Ma, she shouldn’t be too upset about it — the 26-year-old actress has Alice Through the Looking Glass, which premieres this year, to look forward to.
