5 Seconds of Summer Battles Beyoncé & JAY-Z for No. 1 Spot on Billboard Chart

By  |

When Beyoncé and JAY-Z went and dropped their surprise album, Everything is Love, over the weekend, the world was SHOOK! And, like with most things The Carters do, it quickly became a success and was almost guaranteed to get the No. 1 spot on the highly coveted Billboard 200 chart. But wait just a second… There’s now a chance the married musicians will actually not debut with the highest position. Are pigs flying? Is the fat lady singing? Nope! It all comes down to a little band called 5 Seconds of Summer.

Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford and Ashton Irwin released their third studio album, Youngblood, on June 15, and while they hadn’t put out new music in almost three years, fans stuck by their side. Billboard reports that the Australian band is giving Bey and Jay a run for their money and is a strong contender to go to the top of the chart this week.

If 5SOS somehow manages to outsell The Carters, it would become the first Australian band in history to have its first three albums hit number one in the U.S. This would be an incredible accomplishment and the boys asked fans to help them achieve it.

And you know what happens when 5 Seconds of Summer asks for help? The #5SOSFam comes out and DOES THE DANG THING. Support Twitter accounts are organizing streaming parties, coming up with plans to maximize album sales, etc. — basically, they want the No. 1 just as bad as Calum, Luke, Michael and Ashton.

Even friend Niall Horan, who 5SOS toured with several times, joined in on the fun.

It’s going to be close, for sure, which is a feat in and of itself.

“To think that 4 dudes from Western Sydney could even have a chance against two of the most successful artists of all time is insane,” Michael tweeted. “W would be the first band in history to have our first three albums go #1 in the US. we are so close. 5sos fam for life.”

While having his third number 1 album would be incredible, Ashton is trying his best to forget about the numbers and just be grateful that people are liking Youngblood.

“I am just happy people are listening,” he wrote on Twitter.

The final chart positions will be posted this Sunday, June 24. Could four young guys from Australia beat the most iconic musical duo in Hollywood? You never know!
